Intellectual Profile
Sociologist.
Researcher at the Institute of Sociology – University of Porto, where he has worked in several research projects, including the recently concluded large scale in-depth project Ilhas, bairros e classes laboriosas: um retrato comparado da génese e estruturação das intervenções habitacionais do Estado na cidade do Porto e das suas consequências sociais (1956-2006) [Slums, public housing and the working classes: a compared portrait of the genesis and structuring of public housing policies in the city of Porto and of their social consequences (1956-2006)], coordinated by Virgílio Borges Pereira and funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. To find out more about this research, see (in English): "State, housing and the «social question» in the city of Porto (1956-2006)...".
Finishing his PhD at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Porto. The PhD thesis will focus on the state's urban and housing policies in Porto's inner city and their effects on the transformation of the urban and social fabric of this area. One of the results of these policies - the rehousing process of 300 families from medieval Ribeira-Barredo to Bairro do Aleixo (a social housing project in the city's first periphery) - will be the "case to extend". This research project is also funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. A PDF of João's work on the gentrification of Porto's historic centre is available below.
