Virgílio Borges Pereira and João Quieros' Portuguese bibliography

Virigilio and João have created a joint recommendations list. Their Portuguese Bibliography on poverty, marginality, inequality/urban segregation and stigmatisation is presented below:

  • Aurora C. Teixeira et al. O Que Sabemos Sobre a Pobreza em Portugal? (Transl. "What do we know about poverty in Portugal?"). Lisboa, Vida Económica. 2010.
With contributions from economists and sociologists, this is a recent book on the question of poverty in Portugal.

  • Luís Fernandes O Sítio das Drogas (English translation: "The site of Drugs"). Lisboa, Notícias. 1998.
This is now a classic ethnographic study of “psychotropic spaces” in Porto.

  • Fernando Luís Machado Contrastes e Continuidades: migração, etnicidade e integração dos Guineenses em Portugal (Transl. "Contrasts and continuities: migration, ethnicity and integration of Guineans in Portugal"). Oeiras, Celta. 2002.
This is a seminal sociological study about the composition and the processes of social inscription of African migrants in Portugal, with a special focus on the immigrants from Guinea-Bissau. It gave origin to a well established research line on the subject in Portuguese sociology.

  • Virgílio Borges Pereira Classes e Culturas de Classe das Famílias Portuenses: classes sociais e ‘modalidades de estilização da vida’ na cidade do Porto (English translation: "Classes and class cultures of Porto’s families: social classes and ‘modalities of stylization of life’ in the city of Porto"). Porto, Afrontamento. 2005.
Structured as a multimethod approach, this is a sociological study about social classes in Porto concerned with the understanding of the links between social and symbolic divisions.

  • Marielle Christine Gros Espaço Residencial e Modo de Vida, contributos da sociologia para a reabilitação de uma área residencial degradada (English translation: "Residential space and way of life, sociological contributions to the rehabilitation of a depredated residential area"). Aveiro, Tese de Doutoramento apresentada à Universidade de Aveiro. 1998.
This is a relevant PhD thesis about residential deprivation in the historic centre of Porto.
